Nova Scotia: Kayak Camp Inner Islands

easy Four days of easy sea-kayaking to island campsites, within paddling distance to evening restaurants for fine dining.

Paddle among the islands and village coastlines of Mahone Bay, between Lunenburg and Chester.  This is a very relaxed paddle, with plenty of time to enjoy the beaches, the warm water (we hope), and the villages within paddling distance of where you will be dining on two of the three nights. The other night provides a meal on the beach, with a view of the hundreds of islands surrounding you.  This adventure keeps you in relatively sheltered water, and allows you to paddle with a small load. It’s a perfect introduction to paddling, beachfront camping and wholesome Nova Scotian dinners.

Day 1:   5-10km
Optional transfer from Halifax is available, otherwise meet in Hubbards at 10:00 for a transfer to the start of kayaking near Lunenburg. A short paddle takes you to your first camp in a beautiful island beachfront setting, followed by an afternoon of exploring to your heart’s content. Early in the evening, you will paddle to the nearby village of Mahone Bay for dinner, and will return to your campsite by dusk, just in time to light a fire and enjoy the stars before drifting into slumber. Preferred islands: Covey’s, Backman’s and Andrews. LD

Day 2:  5-10km
Paddle past boatbuilding shops, mussel farms, and lovely seafront estates to your campsite on a sandy beach on an island in the middle of the bay. A seafood supper will precede the beauty of dusk. Preferred islands: Rafus, Mason and Bella. BLD

Day 3:   10-15km
A downwind (usually!) paddle this morning takes you to your island within view of Chester – a village so popular among yachtsmen and summer residents that it’s home to several regattas, a good playhouse, a lively tavern, and a choice of fine dining. The best part is that you can enjoy all that and still sleep beneath the stars on another idyllic island beachfront!  BLD

Day 45km
A relaxed breakfast precedes your final paddle to the beach at Graves Island. The trip concludes in Hubbards. Optional transfer to Halifax is available. BL

Start: Hubbards, 10:00 day one. Transfer from Halifax $25pp.
