Welcome to Freewheeling's Yoga connection!

Autumn Sail Loft Yoga Newsletter

If you regularly practice yoga, you already know its benefits. Practitioners find that they feel better when they do yoga, have a realistic sense of their body’s capabilities, and enjoy a calmer, more balanced way of looking at their world. Yogis on a Freewheeling Adventure are also more likely to embrace the unpredictable nature of weather, mechanical difficulties, interpreting directions, and hills that weren’t mentioned in the route notes. The idea of experiencing a spirit of adventure is less daunting with yoga on your side!

As you plan your Freewheeling Adventure, you might give some consideration to how you will incorporate yoga into the structure of your holiday. Regular practitioners know that it can fit in anywhere and anytime. If you do not practice yoga, or have never practiced, try a class or two before your trip. It will help condition you for bicycling, kayaking, hiking, and for the general rigors of travelling.

Co-founder Cathy Guest is a yoga teacher certified (500 hour) in hatha-vinyasa yoga (multi-disciplinary), with a special fondness for Ashtanga. She continues to train Freewheeling guides to increase the possibility that, wherever you are in the world, you can practice yoga with a careful and knowledgeable teacher. Many of our guides will be qualified to offer gentle yoga sessions, incorporating wonderful stretches and invigorating or relaxing breathwork, as the group dynamic dictates. This means that you can enjoy yoga postures on a break from your bicycle as you pass by an inviting beach, or after you pull your kayaks up on a deserted island and notice that your shoulders are oh-so-stiff! You might also enjoy an early morning meditation at your inn, guided or self-guided, or an after-ride cool down and rest. If you would like to participate in yoga classes during your holiday, or work with a teacher, there are available websites that list teachers, their qualifications, and their areas of expertise. In our Atlantic area, for example, you can find lots of yoga information on www.yogaatlantic.ca. Please ask us if you are interested in having yoga sessions replace some of the scheduled activities in your trip. For example, if there are two of you traveling together, one an enthusiastic cyclist, the other more interested in yoga, you might ask us to look into the possibilities of altering the itinerary. This is a request that can be accommodated with pre-planning, so it is best if you don’t wait until you are in Spain, for example, to ask your guide: Where’s the yoga?

Cathy offers a variety of options for the yogis at heart on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. You might consider the Yoga Retreat , the Bike and Yoga Getaway or a five hour Bike Skills and Yoga session. You can come to class, enjoy a private session, or have a special retreat designed especially for one or more incorporating all the things you love: peaceful and beautiful surroundings, food that is good for you AND tastes good, and a mix of yoga, bicycling, kayaking, walking, chanting, meditation, dancing, or whatever your dreams dictate!

Option 1: Attend a regularly scheduled class, ongoing throughout the year; our website lists rates and the schedule.

Option 2: Yoga with Cathy for one and a half hours: $30 for one, or $15 each for two or more. This is a well rounded flow class with a comfortable warm up and closing, and meditation. (With two or more students in the same class, there should be a consensus on the pace of the class: slow and gentle; moderate; or vigorous flow.)

Option 3: Yoga with Cathy for two and a half hours, followed by a light refreshment: $60 for one, or $30 each for two or more. This is a workshop style class, with opportunities for questions, discussions, and more in-depth work on the postures. (With two or more students in the same class, there should be a consensus on the pace of the class: slow and gentle; moderate; or vigorous flow.)

Option 4: Bike Skills and Yoga, five hours, includes lunch and snacks, $120 for one, $60 each for two, or $45 each for three or more. You must bring your own bike (bicycle rentals are available from Freewheeling). The workshop offers an opportunity for cyclists with some prior riding experience to learn more about changing gears more efficiently, how to ride safely in a group, and builds confidence about sharing the road with traffic. Gentle yoga before and after is incorporated to help with balance, strength, and confidence on the bike. Please see our website for more details.

Option 5: What works for you? Please call us with any questions about how you can incorporate yoga into your holiday time with us. We will do our best to help you in any way we can.
