Costa Rica Relaxed Bike Tour

Seven nights; seven days; four inns, and days off between rides to enjoy the nature of your stops. Wildlife is abundant, and you are likely to feel a part of it!

Itinerary

Start: Liberia airport, day one.

Finish: Liberia airport, noon, day eight.

Day 1:

Arrival

Pickup at Daniel Odubar airport in Liberia, for transfer to your first seaside retreat at Playa Junquillal. Test your bike for tomorrow’s ride, go for a dusk horseback ride on the beach, or a hike, then unwind over a simple dinner. D
Villa Serena, or

Hotel Guacamaya Lodge; Playa Junquillal

Day 2:

Cycling to Nosara ~34km

This is spectacular start, riding on rough roads with very minimal traffic, touching several beaches along the way, including Ostional Beach Wildlife Refuge, where dozens, sometimes thousands of turtles come ashore nightly to lay eggs. This is the only place in the world where a legal harvest of turtle eggs is sometimes allowed for a short period each moon. It helps the local community, prevents poaching, and enhances productivity. It also inspires lively debate between scientists and fishermen. You are very likely to see nesting turtles here, and can revisit the beach at night to see them in abundance. Finish in the cowboy town of Nosara. BLD
Harmony Hotel, Nosara

Day 3:

Nosara

Start the day with an optional canopy tour – perhaps the best in Costa Rica, with a waterfall and fantastic views over the Pacific. Explore three beaches by bike, or on foot, do yoga at the Nosara Institute or at your hotel, or simply relax. B
Same lodging

Day 4:

Cycling to Sámara ~31km

Morning ride to Samara, with a stop at Playa Garza where a coral reef protects the crescent bay and its broad, white-sand beach. Take a break under the palm trees and have a refreshing plunge before finishing your ride to Sámara. This laid-back town is one of the biggest along this ride, and provides many fine options for dinner. BL
Villas Kalimba, or

Hotel Sámara Beach; Sámara

Day 5:

Sámara

Morning hike, or optional horse ride to waterfalls with three cataracts and wonderful swimming. There are many choices for optional activity this afternoon, including canopy tours, sport fishing, scuba, sea kayak, and surf – an easy introduction thanks to the coral reef protecting the beach. There is an authentic feel in this picturesque town as many Ticos spend holidays and run excellent restaurants here. B
Same lodging

Day 6:

Cycling to Playa San Miguel ~30km

Today you can savour the tropical delights of Costa Rica’s finest and less visited beaches as you make your way from Sámara to Playa San Miguel. This beach is known for white sand and tranquil waters - a seldom visited coast full of wildlife and perfect for long beach walks and beautiful sunsets. BLD
Hotel Cristal Azul, Playa San Miguel, or

upgrade to Hotel Punta Islita, Playa Islita ($200pp extra per night; ride reduced by 9km)

Day 7:

Playa San Miguel

A day at one of the nicest beaches in Costa Rica, with options to surf, ride horses, sea kayak, practice yoga, or relax. If you like long beach bike rides, the route south toward Mal Pais is fantastic, and we can drive you one-way if you like! BD.

Optional early morning ride, with pickup enroute for transfer to Liberia airport, 2.5 hours drive. B

Description

Note about the route:

Short rides on hilly coastal roads, some of which are nicely paved, others with a very rough gravel surface. This relaxed version of the trip allows two nights at each lodge and a beach day between each cycling day, but does not include the mountainous Monteverde section of the challenging Costa Rica ride. Come prepared for hilly rides in hot, dry conditions. We recommend early starts, and afternoons at the beach or the pool. Mountain bikes are essential.

Costa Rica sets the pace and space for a wonderful active holiday. The climate is perfect for cycling and swimming; the people are educated, friendly, and beautiful; and there are heavenly places to rest at night. This adventure is planned to give you ample opportunity to savour your surroundings, while enjoying the best tropical beach ride in Costa Rica. It includes abundant wildlife sightings, beautiful rides on quiet roads, opportunities for surfing and horseback riding, and rests at exquisite lodges. You will visit absolute biological reserves, deserted beaches, and cascading waterfalls, and will fall asleep to a background of tropical surf on the enchanting beaches of the north Pacific coast. The riding includes some short challenges on rough and hilly roads, but the reward is the arrival at places quiet and superbly untrammelled. You can take your time each day, or simply enjoy an early finish by the pool or at the beach.

Custom or Private Tours

Want to go but on different dates?
Want to make a change to the itinerary?
We can adapt for you!

Here are some terms:

Bring your friends. We will run most of these trips for you whenever you want, at the advertised price for a group of four or more on a guided trip, or two if it's self-guided! We reserve the right to make changes if the original inns, etc. are already booked. If you cannot find others, let us advertise the trip for you! Give us a commitment as far in advance as you can. As long as we have the minimum number of guests at the start, the price will be as advertised. The catch is that if it is just two of you and you want a guided trip, you must be willing to pay a 20% premium in the event that others do not join you. The bright side is that, once reserved, you can count on the trip, whether it remains private or becomes a larger group. Ask for changes to the itinerary.

We are very flexible, and given enough time, can create a new itinerary to match your desires.
